To answer my own question: NOTHING is wrong with it!
Turns out that the sysadmin had me using a socket to connect to the database, rather than 'localhost' and suddenly MySQL started ignoring all 'writes'. It wasn't this one script that was down - it was ALL of them. He figured out the problem in about 10 minutes and changed the host to 'localhost' and suddenly everything was working again.
The terribly confusing thing was that SELECTS worked just fine.
