I'm trying to install a local copy of PEAR on a shared host (I can't add packages to the central copy) and have tried the instructions at http://pear.php.net/manual/en/installation.shared.php . The following is what I get: bash-2.05a$ pear -s -c ~/.pearrc -d doc_dir=~/pear/docs -d ext_dir=~/pear/ext -d php_dir=~/pear/lib -d data_dir=~/pear/data -d test_dir=~/pear/tests -d cache_dir=~/pear/cache -d bin_dir=~/pear/bin pear: unknown config file type `userdefined' bash-2.05a$ Any suggestions as to what is going wrong?

That is really weird. Just when you think you've seen everything :) If you don't figure out the problem sooner, I would suggest waiting until PEAR 1.4.0a1 is out, and then use pear config-create on your local computer to set up your config file and then upload it to the host. $ pear config-create /home/username/pear config.ini then upload config.ini to ~/.pearrc and you'll be in business.
I'm not keen on waiting for a new version of PEAR, my webhosts aren't the quickest at installing new stuff on their servers. Can anyone tell me what this message actually means and what I may do by way of further diagnosis or remedy?
It's probably a bug in 1.3.5. 1.4.0a2 is out. You can install/upgrade on your local host and use the config-create command, this will allow you to get in business even with 1.3.5 installed on the host. Greg
