Ok - wow.
After about 8 hours on the phone with the hosting guys (so understanding! free!) we figured out the problem.
It was *not* the php version, OR the overload thing, OR the mysql version.
Get this.
It was that DreamweaverMX2004 was uploading all my files as binary.
Dreamweaver never lets you select the transfer method because "it knows best".
When I used WS-FTP instead and set it to ASCII transfers only, the whole site came alive.
Thanks so much to all of you who tried to help me resolve this most frustrating issue.

PS--No, I'm not a WYSIWYG goombah -- I just like it for its code view colour coding, and integrated FTP (Foobar'd Transfer Protocol)
