Assuring PEAR Installed Correctly under XAMPP Distribution

I have read the PEAR installation documentation, but it is not clear how
much of the installation has been completed automatically as a result of an
XAMPP distribution. I have posted a question on the XAMPP general list but
received no answer yet, so I wondered if it were possible to "back into" the
answer to this question - how does one know if PEAR has been appropriately
installed in a LAMP environment?
