Most of the higher-level PEAR database packages (above the DB/MDB/MDB2 level) depend on DB. If you want to use any of those (DataObjects, some of the pagers, the FormBuilder tie-ins), then you're tying yourself to DB. I don't see MDB2 being "the future of portability in PHP" until the other tools support it natively as well as / instead of DB.
