No, there's no need for a special element type to use in formbuilder.
I had my own copy of the dual-select element a little while ago but my
changes were put into the package that has been released. As I said,
AFAIK it has double-click support. Try it.
To use any non-default element type in FB use the elementTypeMap
option and make sure that your special element type is registered
(this usually only takes requiring the element's file).
