DataObject PHP 4 problem

Hi,
We have a script that runs fine on our local WAMP 5 server (PHP5) but does not work at all in PHP 4.
The problem is somewhere with DataObject that we are using in it. We changed all 'publc
$variable' to 'var $variable' in the autogenerated DO files.
DO object is created OK with 'new' and print_r($do) shows all the values. But when we try
$do->setFrom($_REQUEST);
the script exits.
Can DataObject work in PHP 4 and if yes are there some other standard changes that we need to do.
