DB: when do you need to use $db->disconnect() ?

I've seen disconnect() used in some code and not in
others. I use autoprepare/autoexecute for all
insert/update and $db->query() for select queries.
I've searched but found nothing yet definitively
indicates when to use disconnect() and when it's not
needed.
