I need much more information to help. pear -V, run the same command as pear -vvvv upgrade -f liveuser, whether you're using sudo, and so on. This is a serious error, one that should never occur under any circumstance. It's generally caused by a locking or permissions issue. Forgot to ask, but perhaps it is possible to show the underlying OS error (if any). I wouldn't have even posted this "problem" if the installer could hint me about insufficient permission.
Thanks again, Jeroen
