I HIGHLY recommend a book by David Sklar called,
"Essential PHP Tool".
It covers, Pear DB, Pear Auth, Pear HTML_Quickform,
XML, Profiling,.. - in a very nice readable format
with lots of examples and explanations.
I used it extensively when I first started using Pear
and still use it weekly.
Regards.
