Issues with File_Archive and php5

Hi there, has anyone been experiencing bugs with php5 and File_Archive, i had this issue before but i had happened to fix it now it has come back the error i get is Only variables can be passed by reference I ended up fixing that by sending the output as a variable , however now no files are being added to the zip file , it comes up blank. The developers site is offline i cant find anywhere else where to find examples.
