What version of PEAR are you using? I have had issues with 1.4.1 on a few of my servers. I was getting seg faults when trying to install/upgrade pretty much anything. Here is the only way I know to resolve the issue: 1) pear download PEAR-1.3.6 2) manually copy PEAR-1.3.6 into /usr/share/pear/PEAR 3) pear install -f PEAR-1.3.6 4) pear upgrade PEAR I am not sure if this is the recommended fix, but it works for me.
