Structures_DataGrid with Smarty?

I'm looking into Structures_DataGrid, and am seeing that is has a Smarty renderer, but the user docs don't really say how to use it.
And then in searching for it, I find things such as this:

Which make me wonder if I should be using it in production environments yet.
