Question about Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer

I have been use the Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer package but i can't write a date in dd/mm/yyyy
format...
For example:

require_once 'Spreadsheet/Excel/Writer.php';
$workbook = new Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer();
$date_format = & $this->workbook->addFormat(
array(
'Align' => 'center',
'Border' => 1,
'BorderColor' => 'black',
'Color' => 'black',
'FgColor' => 'white',
'NumFormat' => 'DD/MM/YYYY',
'Size' => 10
)
);
$worksheet =& $workbook->addWorksheet();
$worksheet->write(0, 0, '2005/01/01, $date_format);
?>
The date remains as 2005/01/01 and not 01/01/2005.
The same happens with currency data, i have to output them in $00,000.00 or $-15.471,85 format, for
exampe $-15,471.85 but the currency output is $-15471,85!
Can help me with this???
