setDefaults of Group Element

How can I set the default value of an element within a group? I've got code that looks like this:
$comGroup[] = &$HTML_QuickForm::createElement('select', 'State', 'State:', $STATES);
$form->addGroup($comGroup, $groupName, NULL, '');
$form->setDefaults(array($groupName . '[State]' => 'CA');
I've also tried
$form->setDefaults(array($groupName['State'] => 'CA);
Neither have worked. Is what I want possible?
