Quickform - can you add an emptyOption to a select-type element?

I tried:
$form->addElement('select', 'nameList', 'Names',
$nameList, array('addEmptyOption'=>TRUE));
And it NOT add an empty option to the list.
Can you add an empty option and if so, how?
