php executable

Hi,
I'm running PHP 4.2.1 with apache and everything works well.
But when I want to run /usr/local/bin/pear, I get 'command not found'. On
the first line of pear is referenced to /usr/local/bin/php. On my system
there seems to be no such executable. How can I install php so that it
works with apache and it can run the pear-command?
