Pear and installing packages .. help!?

Hello.
I'm trying to install pear and some packages but am running into
problems.
Installing PEAR and the packages bundled in go-pear works fine but when
I want to install packages such as:
HTML_Quickform
HTML_Table
Excel
etc.
On the webpage they talk about 'pear install <pear-package>' but this
pear executable is not installed after running the go-pear installer and
therefore I can't run 'pear install ..' commands. How do I install these
packages ?
I tried getting the whole cvs tree and putting it under a directory in
my include_path like they talk about on
http://vulcanonet.com/soft/?pack=pear_tut#ss5.1.
At least then I got the
whole cvs tree and all the packages but packages like DB weren't able to
find PEAR system files. Am I doing everything wrong or is this tutorial
outdated ?
