setDefaults to update advcheckboxes on a HTML_Quickform

I'm using HTML_Quickform package to create my registration form. This form has the usual textfields but also advcheckboxes. The textfield info saves to the Users table but the advcheckboxes save to a Userskills table ie. only the skills checked are saved with the users id... In my update form I have code which gets the users id and then updates the textfields in the form using setDefault. So what it does is read the editable fields from the Users table eg. Profile, Email and then updates these on the form. This works fine. What I also want to do however is create a seperate setDefault which will look through the Userskills table and find skills which match the users id (in other words the skills which this user saved to the table) and then update the advcheckboxes only... Hope that makes sense? So basically, how can I use setDefault to update only part of a quickform, in this case - advcheckboxes???
