XML error with PEAR

Hello,
Ia m currently trying to install the Nagios software and for this I need to
have an upgraded version of Pear.
For the moment, I have pear version 1.3.2, php version 4.3.9 and Zend engine
1.3.0 (I had this information with pear help version)
My problem is when I try to upgrade this version with :
pear upgrade -a PEAR-1.3.6, I have the answer :
XML error at line 1, check URL
Invalid return payload: enabling debugging to examine incoming payload
I have : XML_Parser 1.0.1 and XML_RPC 1.1.0
I will be so grateful if someone can solve my problem
