DB: persistent connections

After looking through the documentation on the DB module, I havent seen any
reference to persistent connections. I am in the process of working on a
site with a PostgreSQL database and am trying to decide whether to use the
Pear module or the plain pg_ commands. Does using the pear module suffer
from not having persistent connections?
