Secure sockets with pear. HTTP_Request Package?

Maybe I'm not browsing in the right places but is there a PEAR package
that does secure HTTP Requests? I need something that can negotiate the
SSL handshake. If PEAR can't do this, are there plans to extend teh
HTTP_Request package to include this or is there some other non-PEAR
alternatives?
Or am I better off compiling in OpenSSL support?
