imagick w php 4.3

Hi - attempting to install imagick-0.9.3 with php-4.3. Following the INSTALL doesn't seem to work correctly - it doesn't attempt to configure or install the extension during the normal configure. I manually compiled the extension: phpize, ./configure --with-imagick, copied the imagick.so to the extensions dir, and added 'extensions = imagick.so' to php.ini, but this results in php randomly dying when it encounters imagick functions (even though phpinfo() correctly displays an enabled imagick extension).
