Retrieving affectedRows from query

How can I retrieve the value from an insert/update query in Postgres
I need both affected and lastoid from result, and I change the code in
pgsql.php to access lastoid:
function simpleQuery($query)
{
...
if ($ismanip) {
$this->affected = @pg_cmdtuples($result);
$this->lastoid = @pg_getlastoid($result);
return DB_OK;
} elseif (preg_match('/^\s*(SELECT)\s/i', $query) &&
...
I means, with reference can I use? $db->affectedRows() and
$rs->affectedRows() don't works.
