pear templating + fast template

hi my current work place uses fast template for their pages which allows
designers to view the main template in design mode, i was wondering if the
pear template classes would be faster to parse and if they can have more
control of the data , whereas fast template wants control of both the data
and hows its layed out , as its critical sometimes where you parse the
template in the php file and has become a huge headache :| , also would xsl
be an option
