MDB_FETCHMODE_ASSOC will have to do.
$result = $mdb->query($query);
while(is_array($row = mdb->fetchRow($result, MDB_FETCHMODE_ASSOC))
{
echo $row['gallery'];
}
should do the same ... unless the prolonged stay at work as made me
delusional :-)

article on MDB that as a section about how to move from PEAR DB to MDB.
