I had the same problem and found this solution:
I made my own Auth_HTTP and changed the assignData method.
class Auth_HTTP_better extends Auth_HTTP
{
function assignData()
{
if ($_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'] != "") {
$this->username = $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'];
}
if ($_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'] != "") {
$this->password = $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'];
}
}
}
