Prepare and MSSQL

I am inserting a body of text into MSSQL2000. It prefers quotation marks to
be doubled to escape. I tried out prepare() and ended up with THREE slashes
and a database error. Does anyone have a solution?
Here's an example of what I have going on:
$text = "this is someone's input";
$stmt = "INSERT INTO tablename SET Textfield = '?' ";
$dbh = connectDB();
$sth = $dbh->prepare($stmt);
$dbh->execute($sth, $text);
