PEAR DB problems

Hello all,
I cannot seem to get an instance of DB when using DB::connect() and DB
version 1.4b1. When I do a pear install DB I get this version even
though it says that version 1.3 is the one out there.
I manually installed DB v1.3 from pear.php.net and I can get
DB::connect() to fly but it says "DB Error: NO Such Database" for every
database I try.
Whats going on with this thing? Should I install the beta so that the
pear package manager sees that DB is installed?
