This may or may not be relevant, however ...
In RedHat 9.0, there are some changes to PHP configuration files that
reflect similar changes to Apache configuration files in RH8.0.
Have a look at all the new directories in /etc/httpd and /etc/php.d, and
at the new httpd.conf file which includes stuff from them.
/etc/php.d contains an imap.ini file that may or may not have anything
at all to do do with your problems. Might be worth knowing about though.

I installed PEAR onto my new Redhat 9 box, and now Apache starts, but
won't serve pages, and I get all sorts of error messages when running
pear.
It looks like the automatic remote install of pear may have modified my
std
c libs....
