Log_mail error

Hello,
logging to file will work perfectly. But using the Log_mail container the same
way gives the error message:
Call to undefined function: pear()
Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong? My code looks like:
$log = &Log::singleton('mail', 'alexander.schilling@med.uni-tuebingen.de',
null, array('subject' => 'Log Message'),
PEAR_LOG_INFO);
$log->log("Hello", PEAR_LOG_ALERT);
I am using Log V 1.6.4
