sql2xml displays rows w/o xml notation

I copied the first tutorial below but when I print $xmlstring I get is just a simple display of the actual row data with no xml notation.

include_once("sql2xml.php");
$sql2xmlclass = new xml_sql2xml("mysql://testid:testidpwd@localhost/mysql","documentroot");
$xmlstring = $sql2xmlclass->getxml("select * from mytable");
print $xmlstring;
?>
I am using pear/php on a MS-IIS5.0, php4.3.1 enabled with domxml, iconv, xmlrpc, xslt. I must have missed something in the install of pear and/or sql2xml packages. Appreciate any help.
