Quickform: how to span two cols with a static element?

Hi,
I'm using Quickform, v 1.58 2003/02/02
I have the following line:
$this->form->addElement('static', 'note1', $note1);
is there any hack i can use to get it to span two cols? ie, so it would cover the label td as well as the <input> td?
I can't upgrade to 3.x as I already have a lot of code using this version.
