Hmmm, did you really expect that using a wrapper will be not
significantly slower than native functions?
As said often here and there, the usage of a DB layer or an abstraction
layer (a la MDB) will be slower (even much slower in some cases) than
the native functions.
The performance decreases while your wrapper complexity grows. No hidden
informations from the DB authors. Just a logical and simple fact, use DB
if you need it, not just for the fun, if the performance is one of your
priorities.
The same rule applies for any kind of wrappers or classes available
around.
