i also experienced problems with that, i had switched to Smarty, but
there all my problems had not been solved either, so i needed to
implement a special solution, have a look at
http://wolfram.kriesing.de/programming/index.php#SimpleTemplate
if you like to try something new
look at the "{%block%}" example, that does what you need
