pear and horde

I am trying to install Horde/Pear/IMP. I've got Horde installed and checked the test page. Everything comes up properly except the Pear section. This is the error. PEAR 
    * PEAR - No
    * Check your PHP include_path setting to make sure it has the PEAR library directory.
    * Recent PEAR - No
    * Mail::RFC822 - No
    * Log - No
    * DB - No
I untarred pear into /usr/lib/php/pear and am using PHP 4.0.6 Can someone please tell me where exactly pear should reside and is there any setting file i should modify to point to that directory. This is the error I get when I point my browser to the horde page Fatal error: Failed opening required 'PEAR.php' (include_path='') in /var/www/html/horde/lib/Registry.php on line 4 Appreciate any help -Sudhakar
