Hi Stephen,
I tried to install pear from a debian-package too, and it was also broken. Then i download the unstable-package from a debian-server, this runs with some biasic pear-packages. If you are runnning the original dabian-packeg php4.1.2 on apache, you can try to download pear-packages direct from the pear-webpage, you also can install pear from the page in a local directory (/home/stephen/...). If you are admin and it doesn't matter that you install software from a third part(pear) install pear as root with the lnyx-syntax.
greetings,
Gerd
