DB getXxx with params array

Has anyone had any luck getting the following syntax to work under PEAR::DB?
$blah = $db->getOne("SELECT foo FROM bar WHERE xyzzy = ?", array($plover));
The manual claims this will allow you to leverage prepare/execute via the
getXxx methods. However, I am having no luck with it under w/ PEAR::DB 1.3
(with Oracle) -- it just returns a null result. Does it work in more recent
versions (or with different databases)?
