Hello PEAR crew,
I'm a new user to the PEAR packages, but even in the short bit of
experimenting I've done so far I can see already what a powerful system it
is! Sweet!
The reason for the message is I'm hoping you folks can help me with a set-up
problem. NOTE: Please keep in mind I have almost no knowledge of UNIX...
unfortunately.
Our site is on a shared server at Pair Networks. We have FTP and telnet
access to the server and it's running PHP 4.3.4. The Pair support people
provided me with the path to the pre-installed PEAR package
('/usr/local/lib/php/PEAR') but they provide no support beyond providing
that info.
Here's the problem / scenario:
1) After modifying my include path I'm able to get to the DB.php file and
have gotten it to work (it queried the DB successfully).
2) Without any other modifications to my script I tried to load the
HTML_QuickForm package (my test script is shown below), but it didn't work.
It produced the following error:
Warning: defaultdriver(HTML/QuickForm.php): failed to open stream: No such
file or directory in
/usr/www/users/guyfin/gf_dot_com/includes/apps/freebieSignUp/class.freebieSi
gnUp.php on line 101
3) I tried modifying the include path to include
'/usr/local/lib/php/PEAR/HTML' but that didn't help.
4) I was going to try installing our own copy of PEAR using the web
installer, but the support people at our ISP said something about not having
a separate HTTP proxy configuration for our site, so I couldn't get beyond
the first line of the installer configuration settings.
I'm thinking that maybe they don't have the HTML_QuickForm files installed
on our server - was it not included in PHP 4.3.4?
So now I'm trying to figure out the best thing to do. Any suggestions? Some
questions that come to mind:
1) Would it be best for me to just try to do a complete install of PEAR in a
folder on our site? Is this even possible, or must I install one package at
a time as needed?
2) Those of you who are UNIX masters (or at least soon-to-be masters), do
you know if I have sufficient access permissions to try installing the PEAR
package by telnet'ing into the server? Gets me a little scared just thinkin'
about trying such a feat!
3) Do you know the minimum set of PEAR items that's needed to get things
working such that dropping in a new package (along with its dependencies)
should work? I've heard a lot about base classes (the base PEAR class and
the error handler?)
4) Can you give me some hints on understanding the folder structure? For
example, how can I find out where packages should be loaded in terms of
directories. I tried downloading and installing the HTML_QuickForm package
in my default PEAR folder (trying to get it running on my own) but after a
while realized that I had to have an HTML folder in the directory structure
somehow. I'm still not really clear on where it goes.
Is there hope for me? By the way --- I bet you guys are feelin' pretty good
not to be in my shoes right now!
Thanks a lot for your help.
Tim
