how to maintain PEAR on webhosting

Hi,
I have shell on my webhosting server, PEAR is installed there (probably
basic installation with PHP), so I can run pear help command, but cannot run
pear info etc., I get error message - could not create lock file: failed to
open stream: Permission denied.
Probably this is normal as I don't have root access, but what to do in such
situation? Should I always ask admin to install/upgrade packages for me?
