Question about PECL Zip package

I need zip support for a PHP application so I followed these instructions
today - but only the first half succeeded:
1) pear install http://pecl.php.net/get/zip-1.0.tgz
2) dl('zip.so');
The install part went well - but the 2) dl('zip.so'); gives an error (syntax
error).
Any idea how I can get zip working on my server ?
