I'm not sure all participants are aware, but PEAR/Validate.php will validate the version number against several factors including the state, package name, whether it extends another package, and so on. Not only that, but if Alan is right and I can't use 1.4.0a1, then I literally can't release 1.4.0a1 until I know which version number it is. So it is VERY much a coding discussion - you won't see any code from PEAR 1.4.0 until this is resolved. Greg
