Hi Martin Jansen! On 11/09/2004 04:06 PM you wrote:
I recently had the idea to provide our package info pages with a blog-like trackback interface (with moderation through the maintainers),
That sounds interesting. Do you envision to display the trackbacks publicly on the website, or should we just provide an interface for the maintainers? (Thinking of trackback spam ...)
I imagine to show them on the website.
We have invested quite a bit of work in streamlining the package homepages. "Cluttering" them with lots of links to other sites may defeat this. I suggest we exclusively publish the trackback information to the maintainers only.
I think putting it either on the documentation tab (which is not really packed with information, yet) or even inventing a new tab like "Further reading" would be nice. This could even be used for the maintainer to provide more than 1 link to external resources.
On a trackback, the lead maintainers get emailed and can approve the trackback (to avoid spam).
I'm not sure if this is the right workflow:
a) People get email without requesting it. b) People will need to manually approve trackbacks, which most of them will consider to be useless.
I agree with you on the point of unrequested email... I guess even we could handle the ammount of trackbacks from the webmasters list. Nevertheless, trackbacks need moderation (see blog applications like S9Y). -- Tobias Schlitt GPG Key: 0xA6529579 a passion for php http://www.schlitt.info Like to say "thank you"? - http://pear.php.net/wishlist.php/toby
