Hi,
After today's mortifying down time of more than 24 hours of
pear.php.net, I thought it might be time to implement some basic
mirroring. After some quick discussions on IRC, this is what we will be
doing:
The mirroring of pear.php.net will be ONLY:
- REST files (http://pear.php.net/rest)
- download tarballs .tgz/.tar for each release
The mirroring initially will not:
- mirror anything else
- be a copy of pear.php.net's user interface
We will start out with a test mirror at us.pear.php.net (IP
66.79.188.205) provided by Josh Eichorn at bluga.net, and then add a
de.pear.php.net mirror (IP 80.237.146.62) provided by Christian Weiske.
Mirroring will be a simple rsync of static files directly from
pear.php.net every 4 hours, with a simple search/replace of
download.pear.php.net in the REST release XML.
Additionally, each mirror needs to provide some kind of REST-based web
service describing downloads that pear.php.net can use to pull in
download statistics on a regular interval. This will be worked out
before the mirror goes live.
The mirrors will be specified in channel.xml when this happens, and will
be manually selected by users:
pear config-set preferred_mirror us.pear.php.net
for instance.
This email is not a call for comments, so much as a "this is what is
happening" informational message.
A huge thank you to Josh Eichorn and Christian Weiske for so generously
stepping up to the plate on this, it is greatly appreciated.
Greg
