- "standard" functions borrowed from C and others (strpos, etc.) will remain asis
so that experienced programmers in other languages can find the basic stuff.
- all renamed functions will be aliased and a warning issued for programmers
to notice that they're using the old naming scheme
- the new naming scheme should be implemented over the next two major releases of PHP,
namely 5.0 and 6.0... So we have some time to get this enforced.
- Options to implement that include special compile-time options such as
--with-strict-names or --with-loose-names...
- We (QAT) also want to make sure that the new naming scheme is approved by the PHP Group
and PEAR people.
Note that the issue of renaming PHP functions, as underlined by Zeev, is not really a big issue from the user point of view as some renaming as already be done transparently (he gave the example of PHP/FI functions that are still there but undocumented).
Anyway, the PEAR and DEV lists will receive an RFC for the renaming when it is issued.
If you want to participate in the discussion, please join the php-qa list and read the last few messages on the "Functions Renaming" threads.
