Are there any reasons why the sources for PHP 5.3.28, 5.4.23 & 5.5.7 still are at 1.4.9/10? After that 2 stable releases of Pecl OCI have been made avalable (2.0.5 and 2.0.6). Would it make sense to upgrade 5.4 and 5.5 to 2.0.6?
OCI8 2.0 has new features so it seems appropriate that it is only in PHP 5.6+. From a general technical standpoint, I'd like to see the PHP 5.4 and 5.5 branches kept as stable as possible. The yearly PHP release cycle is designed to bring new feature releases out relatively quickly.
Or, maybe, remove the OCI extendion from the core PHP releases?
An Oracle DB extension has been part of PHP since PHP 3. There has been discussion every now and again about what extensions should and what shouldn't be in PHP core. One day maybe there'll be a big overall refactor that breaks BC.
