Attached is a diff with php-4.3.9/ext/openssl. It adds openssl_symmetric for symmetric encryption/decryption and openssl_digest for hashing. Although it seems to work on both linux and solaris, I am new to php extension writting, so check it, please.
Thanks for your patch! I'll take a look at it some time this week (I'm a little busy, having just moved countries). Meanwhile, I've CC'd the pecl-dev list to introduce you to other extension developers. If you posted your patch to the list, someone else might be able to give you feedback on general PHP extension stuff before I get to it.
BTW: why nobody checks results of emalloc? Don't sure how to edit php.net/manual/en/ref.openssl.php -- you can just copy relevant sections from new README file.
emalloc "can't" fail; if memory is exhausted, an E_ERROR is thrown and the script is aborted.
Is there are any hope that it will appear in 4.3.10?
Our policy is not to add new features to stable branches, but if you're willing to be around to maintain things, we can publish the openssl extension in PECL (http://pecl.php.net) and make interim releases there. --Wez. (PS: patches for new features should be made against CVS HEAD, although with ext/openssl, there is very little difference).
