Normally on a busy web server you fix the number of client processes and don't waste cycles killing any off and re-forking.
indeed. My problem is not forking. The number of running processes, and context-switches, and kernel-mode-cpu-usage grows when I enable APC.
Couldn't you have exhausted your machine real memory and using too much swap space? I don't use APC these days, I use Turck MMCache but I always disable optimization because I always had bad experiences with bugs in optimizers. OTOH, I know that optimizers tend to use much more memory during optimization phase. If the the process that compiles PHP (optimizing it) is not recycled (die some time later) it will hold a lot of memory that remains allocated. Consider trying APC or any other cache extension without optimization. Most of the gain of performance comes from caching. Doing without optimization is not a big loss. Another healthy habit to avoid the effects of eventual memory leaks is to configure Apache to limit the number of request per process. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos PHP Classes - Free ready to use OOP components written in PHP http://www.phpclasses.org/ PHP Reviews - Reviews of PHP books and other products http://www.phpclasses.org/reviews/ Metastorage - Data object relational mapping layer generator http://www.meta-language.net/metastorage.html
