Using Pear to install PECL_Gen

Hi,
I was triing to install PECL_Gen via pear and it is trying to build c
code, of which there is none,
root@horse:~ # pear -v install PECL_Gen-0.8.5.tgz
1 source files, building
building in /tmp/tmppIXhd0/PECL_Gen-0.8.5
running: phpize
Cannot find config.m4.
Make sure that you run '/usr/bin/phpize' in the top level source
directory of the module
`phpize' failed
Can someone help as I would really like to user PECL_Gen to create an
extension, and pear is a nice easy way to install it.
