Can't get APC-3.0.8 to work

Hi When I try to run PHP w/ APC-3.0.8, I get this message: /usr/local/php-5.0.4/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20041030/apc.so doesn't appear to be a valid Zend extension Also, I checked the apc.so. It has no extension_version_info or zend_extension_entry symbols according to nm, while the xdebug.so & eaccelerator.so (both of which I also compiled myself) do. Anyone got any ideas?
